On the special episode of Africanalysis, we pay tribute to Jean-Jacques Cornish—a remarkable journalist whose voice transcended borders and narratives. As a veteran journalist, he graced the airwaves of South African radio and latterly, podcasts, usually with a warm "Bonjour!" His words not only informed us but created a sense of connection to, principally, the great continent of Africa.
Having covered many international events and with personal connections to many of the protagonists , Jean-Jacques quickly became a trusted Africa correspondent for over many years. He further distinguished himself as the London Bureau Chief of the South African Press Association and a special correspondent to the United Nations at just 25—a testament to his talent and dedication.
Beyond his professional accolades, what truly set him apart was his ability to weave complex African stories with great interest, empathy and clarity. He edited several newspapers, championing narratives that often went unheard, and inspired us all with his credibility and sense of humour.
Today, we honor Jean-Jacques’s legacy by continuing his spirit of curiosity and compassion. Thank you, Jean-Jacques, for your professionalism, honesty and for the many stories you told. Your voice will echo in Africa forever.
